4-day / 3-night itinerary

Four Days in Mammoth Lakes: Mountain and Basin

Arrive on Highway 395, spend one full day at Mammoth Mountain, use the second for the Lakes Basin or a lower-elevation alternative, and keep departure morning in town.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Mammoth Mountain, the Lakes Basin, and Highway 395 each require a separate check of weather, operations, or road access.

Best length

4 days / 3 nights

One arrival day, 2 full days, and a realistic departure day.

Stay

The Village Lodge Mammoth

Condo-style lodging in The Village with balconies, kitchens, a pool, hot tubs, and direct access to dining and the seasonal Canyon gondola.

Main activity

Mountain day + alpine lake day

Use one full day for Mammoth Mountain and one for the Lakes Basin, Reds Meadow corridor when open, or a lower Highway 395 outing.

Trip shape

Two full outdoor days

Use the clearest day for exposed mountain terrain and the calmer day for lakes, trails, or a Highway 395 side trip.

Winter slopes and base facilities at Mammoth Mountain
Choose Main, Canyon, or Eagle after checking the winter lift report.
Forested Lake Mary shoreline beneath eastern Sierra peaks
Use the second full day for one Lake Mary activity and one nearby trail or shoreline stop.
Highway 395 approaching Mammoth Lakes and the eastern Sierra
Keep arrival and departure tied to current Highway 395 conditions.

Arrival

Climb Highway 395, check in, and eat near the room.

Arrival night belongs to altitude adjustment, a nearby dinner, water, and one short Village or neighborhood walk.

4:00 PM

Day 2

Give the clearest day to Mammoth Mountain.

In winter, choose Main, Canyon, or Eagle from the official lift report. In summer, use the bike park, gondola, or a named trail only while current operations support it.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to town with time to store gear.

Allow time for the trip from the mountain, gear storage, and the drive to dinner.

Day 3

Follow Lake Mary Road through the Lakes Basin.

Choose one central lake activity, then add a shoreline walk, trail, or scenic stop while parking and weather cooperate.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return before afternoon storms or dinner.

Leave exposed trails before thunderstorms reach the basin, and allow enough time for the return to town.

Bookable Experiences

Departure

Breakfast, one short stop, and Highway 395.

Keep the last morning near town or the departure corridor; a distant trail or seasonal road does not belong before a fixed flight or long drive.

9:00 AM

Departure morning

Eat in town before the final descent.

Choose breakfast near the room, then check Caltrans conditions before committing to the northbound or southbound drive.
